Fieldstone is natural, and common throughout temperate zones. They aren’t quarried and are often transported by glaciers. Fieldstones lie on or close to the surface. They’re flat and oval shaped, and while color and size depend on their location, they’re usually composed of granite, sandstone and limestone. Colors tend to be variations of gray, light tan, brown, and red.

Fieldstone is Versatile

They can be stacked into a retaining wall or used to edge flower beds. You can lay them down to create a walkway. Plus, when it comes to landscaping and hardscaping, fieldstone is a “go-to” natural material.

What is the Difference Between Fieldstone and Flagstone?

They’re both natural, but fieldstones lie on top of the ground, while flagstones lie underneath and are quarried in slabs. Also, flagstones tend to be flatter and cut in squares and are often blueish in color. They also have great water absorption properties. Fieldstones have a rougher and less flat surface. They come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, colors and textures.

Fieldstone Applications

Landscape Edging: Adding fieldstone as a design element can complement your landscaping. You can create borders for flower beds, boundaries to separate and highlight different areas. Plus, with its natural coloring and texture, fieldstones can help you achieve a rustic, earthy look.

Walls: Fieldstones are perfect for a variety wall types. Stack flat fieldstones for a low retaining wall, or pack stones tightly to create a garden wall that’s attractive and durable. Different shapes, colors and textures are testament to fieldstones’ versatility.
